The Story Behind “Empowered by the Dream: A Journey of Resilience”

Why I wrote this book?

HAVANA TIMES – Every family has stories that shape its identity, but too often those stories disappear with the passing of generations. Empowered by the Dream: A Journey of Resilience was born from my desire to preserve my family’s extraordinary journey before those memories were lost forever. What began as a collection of family anecdotes gradually evolved into a deeply personal project that became both a tribute to my ancestors and a testament to the enduring power of hope, perseverance, and the pursuit of freedom.

The spark for writing this book came from countless conversations with my parents and relatives, who had lived through some of the most turbulent events of the twentieth century. Their lives had been shaped by the Spanish Civil War, the Cuban Revolution, political persecution, exile, and the difficult process of rebuilding their lives in Puerto Rico and later in the United States. As I listened to their stories, I realized that I had inherited not only their memories but also a responsibility to preserve them. I wanted future generations, my children, my grandchildren, and readers everywhere, to understand the sacrifices that made our lives possible and to appreciate the resilience that allowed my family to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

The book also grew from my own life experiences. Although I built a successful career as a scientist and educator, I never forgot the struggles my family endured or the values they instilled in me. Their determination, faith, and unwavering belief that education could transform lives became guiding principles throughout my own journey. As I reflected on my family’s history, I recognized that our story was not unique. It echoed the experiences of millions of immigrants who have been forced to leave everything behind in search of safety, freedom, and opportunity. That realization transformed the project from a family memoir into a story with broader historical and cultural significance.

At its heart, Empowered by the Dream is a story about resilience across three generations. It explores the human cost of war, dictatorship, and displacement while celebrating the enduring strength of family bonds. It reflects the experiences of the Cuban diaspora and the broader immigrant experience—the uncertainty of starting over with little more than hope, the challenge of adapting to new languages and cultures, and the determination to create a better future despite overwhelming adversity. These themes remain as relevant today as ever, making the story both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Writing the book presented challenges that I had never anticipated. The first was the extensive research required to ensure historical accuracy. I spent years interviewing family members, collecting photographs, reviewing old documents, verifying dates, and researching historical events in Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the United States. Often, different family members remembered the same event differently, requiring me to carefully compare accounts and reconstruct the most accurate version of our shared history.

Another challenge was the emotional weight of reliving painful memories. Writing about exile, separation, loss, and political oppression required me to revisit some of the most difficult chapters of my family’s past. Yet those same emotions reminded me why the story needed to be told. I wanted readers not simply to learn about historical events but to experience them through the eyes of ordinary people whose lives were forever changed by extraordinary circumstances.

Balancing historical accuracy with compelling storytelling was another significant challenge. As a scientist, I naturally gravitate toward facts and precision. As an author, I had to learn how to weave those facts into a narrative that would engage readers emotionally while remaining faithful to history. I wanted the book to educate without becoming a history textbook and to inspire without sacrificing authenticity.

The book is also available in Spanish as El Poder de un Sueño: Una Travesía de Resiliencia. Rather than being a literal translation, it was thoughtfully rewritten in Spanish to capture the depth, emotion, and cultural richness of the stories in the language in which many of them were originally lived and remembered.

Today, Empowered by the Dream: A Journey of Resilience represents far more than a published book. It is a legacy for my family and a tribute to those who sacrificed everything so that future generations could live in freedom. It preserves the voices of parents, grandparents, and relatives whose courage might otherwise have been forgotten. It is also my contribution to preserving an important chapter of history through the intimate lens of one family’s experience.

Above all, I hope the book reminds readers that resilience is not reserved for extraordinary people. It is found in ordinary individuals who refuse to surrender in the face of hardship, who continue to dream despite uncertainty, and who believe that tomorrow can be better than today. If readers finish the book with a deeper appreciation for the immigrant experience, a renewed respect for the sacrifices of previous generations, and greater hope in their own ability to overcome adversity, then I will have achieved the purpose that inspired me to write it.

Ultimately, Empowered by the Dream is a celebration of courage, faith, family, and the enduring power of dreams. It is my family’s story, but it is also the story of countless others who have faced unimaginable challenges and emerged stronger because they never stopped believing in a better future.
