Candid Photographs in Miramar, Havana
HAVANA TIMES – The early morning hours are perfect for taking photos. Images benefit from daylight; everything looks different under its influence. As I walk along 5th Avenue and the surrounding streets, I feel a kind of attraction to venturing into what is hidden from view: a garden with lush vegetation, the entrance to a porch, a balcony, and even a terrace with clothes hanging on a line.
It is nice to imagine what lies behind these scenes, that moment at dawn when the residents of these homes prepare to face a new day in a country where uncertainty is a daily reality.
In my previous photo feature, I showed images of the architecture of the former Presencia de Lenin Pioneers’ Palace. This time, I highlight a bust of Jose Marti, almost hidden by the grass in its expansive garden.

Beautiful pictures of what could be achieved everywhere. But Cuba doesn’t have the economic basis to support that. Opposing the US blockade and sanctions on counties trading with or supporting Cuba is a necessary start. Then a coalition of willing international Cuban friends might pave the way so that Cuba evolves for the good of all. Then the pictures might reflect what Cuba could be.
Great photos. Making Cuba look like the Cuba of the travel brochures, not like the harsh reality of modern Cuba.
